Following the major wine trade shows and numerous oenological competitions in Europe, the spotlight now turns to North America, specifically to Montreal, a cosmopolitan city passionate about wines, which will once again be the venue for the prestigious Sélections Mondiales des Vins competition.
The SMV team is working hard to make it an essential event for producers showing interest in the North American, Canadian, and American markets. SMV will be the only international wine competition in North America taking place in October, thus offering exclusive visibility to vintages ready to be released at the end of 2024 and to continue their commercial growth in 2025.

The SAQ and SMV: a sustainable partnership
SMV continues its partnership with the SAQ. In 2024, the SAQ Inspire contest will return. On this occasion, three individuals with a “Grand Connaisseur” profile will represent consumers on the jury. Additionally, the tasting of the SMV 2024 winning wines will take place on October 29, where over 150 wine enthusiasts from Montreal will be invited to discover the award-winning vintages from 10 participating countries.
Once again this year, SMV will renew its promotional agreement with the SAQ, showcasing on SAQ.com 10 products already listed in its catalog and awarded a Grand Gold or Gold medal during the 2024 edition. The list of award-winning wines available at the SAQ (Québec) and the LCBO (Ontario) will be handed over to the sales and marketing teams of these two largest monopolies in Canada on October 15.

Always keeping an eye on market trends, Sélections Mondiales des Vins will highlight certain wine categories that are trending for its 2024 edition.
Respect for Vinification Methods
The wine world faces numerous challenges related to climate change. The “Tasting Climate Change” conference brings together leading international experts to share knowledge on climate issues and propose sustainable solutions. These are important issues that SMV wants to support by emphasizing respect for various vinification methods.
In 2023, over 30% of the wines entered in the competition came from organic, biodynamic, or natural vinification methods. Among these, over 40% were awarded a medal.
Fresh Red Wines, Wines of Pleasure
Fresh red wines are garnering increasing enthusiasm on the markets of Quebec and Ontario. With their light and fruity profile, these wines have become favorites among wine enthusiasts seeking refreshing and versatile options. This year, SMV will group them together to ensure a better assessment of their quality.
Non-alcoholic Wines: A New Offering in the International Market
SMV will provide additional visibility to non-alcoholic wines by creating a specialized jury tasked with evaluating the quality of this range of products, which attract an increasingly large and diverse clientele.
Sake Makes Its Debut in the Competition
Over time, sake has found an increasingly significant place in tasting competitions. In response to the growing popularity of this product stemming from a historic manufacturing method, SMV is now creating a dedicated category for it, providing it with new visibility across various markets in North America.
